Becoming permanently disabled is a great change in your life. It means that you will have to learn to alter much of your lifestyle. Some adjustments may be small while others may signify a complete transformation.
There is no special disability benefit under the Retirement Trust Plan, although limited service credit may continue during an eligible leave of absence. If you become disabled, you may begin receiving benefits as soon as you qualify for either early or normal retirement.
Planning Notes:
If you are under 65 when you become disabled, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability Benefits or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The application process for both of these programs is combined and handled through Social Security. If you become eligible for benefits you may also become eligible for Medicare benefits. Contact your local Social Security office to begin the process. For a thorough discussion of the process and benefits, follow this link to the Social Security website.
